Student Counselling and Guidance Services

Istanbul 29 Mayıs University’s Student Counseling Services offer a variety of services to students throughout their university education, which is a critical milestone in the process of transition from adolescence to adulthood. During this transition period, students take on new responsibilities, make decisions that will impact their future lives, and individualize and rearrange their close relationships accordingly. This transformation is shaped by developmental processes that are accompanied by both positive and negative psychological experiences. Student Counseling Services assist students in their process of coming to know and understand themselves, and by supporting their personal development. Most importantly, these services aim to help students acquire the knowledge and skills that will assist them in coping with the academic, social, and personal problems during this period.

The Student Counseling Services Coordinator provides all the necessary coordination for supervision and runs efficient and reliable services.


Individual Advisor

Each student has an advisor who guides them throughout their academic life. Individual advisors are assigned by the department administration and observe students’ academic performance throughout their education, helping them with the registration and academic problems.

Counseling Services

We are aware of the fact that the academic performance of a student depends on a healthy and happy life. Therefore, we support not only academic but also individual and social improvement. Every student can meet with the counselors.

Academic Support and Supervision Program

The Academic Support Program is designed for students who have adaptation problems with the university programs or receive low grades (undergraduates below 2 out of 4 [GPA] and for preparatory classes below 70 out of 100).

Academic Progress and Supervision Program

The Academic Progress and Supervision Program is designed to support students who are academically enthusiastic and talented, and to remove obstacles in their scholarly progress. It helps students enhance their competence along with the existing course programs.


Components of Academic Improvement Program

Reading Groups

Alongside their current courses in each term, students are encouraged to read other important literature and texts related to their area of interest. These texts are considered important materials for their self-improvement within the framework of this program. An academic staff organizes a reading group and chooses the literature/texts. The member of staff also monitors and participates in each group meeting.

Instructed Reading Programs

Students who take part in this program are given a reading list every term, which is considered important for their self-improvement. Students find an opportunity to regularly discuss their reading notes with their supervisors.

Participation in Academic and Cultural Activities

Students in the program are encouraged to participate in cultural and academic events and meetings that are assumed to be useful and beneficial for their studies and academic careers.

Improving Foreign Language Skills

Students in this program are sponsored for learning foreign languages that are essential and important in their academic progress and careers. The languages in question are taught at the Continuous Education Application and Research Center.

Literature and materials that are considered to be helpful in improving foreign language skills by supervisors are placed in reading groups and Instructed Reading Programs. In Preparatory Classes, academic reading materials and literature are provided for students (e.g. articles, book chapters, books and encyclopedia entries in English, Arabic and Turkish depending on their departments and courses).

Improving Competence in Academic Studies

The purpose of this program is to help students acquire various experiences and skills and to improve academic competence outside their own courses (in presentation, computing skills, research methods, time management, academic writing skills, etc.), as well as to make students acquainted with the graduate programs and research assistantship. Seminars and workshops are organized at certain intervals. Student Supervision Coordinators ensure that students are involved in the Academic Progress Program.

Peer Supervision Program

Students registered for graduate programs at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University can apply to the Peer Supervision Program.

Graduate students whose applications are approved begin to give supervision to undergraduate students 10 hours per week in their own subject areas. This program is monitored and inspected by the Student Supervision Program Coordinator.

Graduate students who take part in the Peer Supervision Program can benefit from facilities like accommodation, scholarships, etc.

The Student Peer Supervisor controls the plans, practices, and inspections in respect to the duties of graduate students in the program.

The Peer Supervision Program works in coordination with the Student Supervision Program.

Supplementary Courses and Seminars

Supplementary language courses (Arabic, Greek, English, and Ottoman) are provided for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Compulsory courses like Classic Arabic, Qur'an Commentary, Hadith and Reading Style of Qur'an (Tajwid) are offered for undergraduate students at the International Faculty of Islamic and Religious Studies.

Almost all academic staff prepare Reading Groups outside their lectures both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Supplementary courses are also organized for graduate students according to their requirements.

Supplementary lessons are regularly organized for students in preparatory classes in the School of Foreign Languages.

Traditional Islamic Arts Workshops are designed to offer courses in Fine Arts like calligraphy, marbling art, music, etc.
