Dr. Derya Karaaslan was born in Istanbul in 1984. She graduated from the Department of Child Development and Education at Hacettepe University in 2007. In 2015, she completed her Master’s Degree in the Special Education Teaching Program for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities at Marmara University with her thesis entitled “An Examination of the Opinions of Families and Specialist Physicians Involved in the Medical Diagnostic Process of Children with Autism.” She pursued her doctoral studies in the Program of Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University and earned her Ph.D. degree in August 2023 with her dissertation titled “The Effectiveness of the Virtually Presented Interactive Unit Method in Teaching Students with Intellectual Disabilities to Solve Addition and Subtraction Word Problems.” She also completed a Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program at the Faculty of Education of Marmara University between 2016 and 2017.
Dr. Karaaslan began her professional career in 2007. Between 2008 and 2010, she worked as a Child Development Specialist at the Metin Sabancı Special Education and Rehabilitation Center of the Turkish Spastic Children’s Foundation, where she provided services to children with various disabilities. From 2010 to 2025, she served as a Child Development Specialist at Zeynep Kamil Training and Research Hospital, conducting developmental assessments, early intervention practices, and follow-up services for at-risk children within the Child Development Unit.
Her academic and professional interests include mathematics instruction for individuals with special educational needs, parent education, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), augmented reality applications in special education, and the education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Dr. Karaaslan is married and has one child.
